If you like the Smart, definitely check out the Honda Fit.
It has a lot of the same design features as the Smart, but it seats five, gets better MPG, and comes base with more features, and is more suitable for the american roads.
if your going in the sub-compact area, then the Honda Fit is THE car. The Yaris and the Versa are also other cars in the same class, but score really low with consumer reports, and aren’t as fun to drive
